These days translation is playing an increasingly important role in international communication through different media platforms. In the past the primary difference was between written translation in printed texts and oral translation. Nowadays, because of the advances in information and communication technology, written and oral translations also take place virtually, thus leading to an increasing variety of media. Early forms of translation involved literary texts, followed later by translation of non-literary texts. Subsequent developments led to increased specialization.
Education and research in the field of translation also developed rapidly. In the past, one learned to translate by practice, nowadays, one learns the skills through education. In Indonesia, as in other countries, schools of translation and translation programs are offered by a number of universities and institutes of higher learning. The question we wish to raise is: to what extent do schools of translation make use of the different media in the formation of professional translators, and how much research is conducted on translation?
In this symposium, practitioners, educators and researchers of translation and interpretation in cooperation with publishers will discuss the impact of print and electronic media on the theory and practice of translation. How did the print media give rise to changes in the thought patterns not only of those responsible for the translation but also of the users of translation. How have the different concepts that have become the foundations of translation developed? Have the new concepts supplemented or replaced the old?
- Translation in print media (mass media, literature, folktales, manuscript).
- Translation in electronic media (internet, website, film subtitles, video).
- Quality of translation (critique, editing).
- Assistance for translators (online dictionaries, CAT, translation engines and translation technologies including translation memory programs and terminology management software).
- Conference Interpreting and Community Interpreting (negotiation, patient care, sign language services).
- Teaching Translation and Interpretation.
Dr. Hansjörg Bittner is a translation scholar at the University of Hildesheim, Germany. His special interests are theoretical questions relating to the quality of translation, including audio-visual translation and, here, in particular, subtitling and audio description. He also works as a freelance translator from German into English and vice versa.
Prof. Dr. Setiawati Darmojuwono (Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities, University of Indonesia) is a Professor of Linguistics who has been active in developing translation as a practitioner as well as academically at the Postgraduate Program. Her ideals are to start a school translation specializing in electronic media translation.
John McGlynn (Lontar Foundation, Jakarta) is Co-founder and Chair of Lontar Foundation whose main goal is the promotion of knowledge about Indonesia through Indonesian literature in translation. He translates from Indonesian into English, specializing in Indonesian works of literature.
Inanti P. Diran, S. Pd., Ed.M (English-Indonesian Interpreter) is a professional English-Indonesian and vice versa interpreter. She is also a trainer for aspiring interpreters at a number of institutes.

Taking into account requests from prospective participants at the First International Translation & Interpretation Symposium Universitas Indonesia 2014, it has been decided to extend the deadline for abstract submission to 14 OCTOBER 2014.
Authors are kindly invited to submit 250-word abstracts to firstname.lastname@example.org. Authors will be notified regarding the acceptance of their abstracts on the 21 October 2014. Full papers are due by 10 November 2014.
